Our Story

The story of PREM STUDIO, Chandni Chowk started in early 1930’s with the blessed hands of Pandit Prem Nath Sharma, Sacha Jyotshi (True Astrologer/Palmist), who established this venue as the esteemed astrology shop, made famous by his truthful predictions for all his devotees. His prominence in the astrology field attracted many dignitaries, including first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad, His Highness Maharaja of Jaipur Raja Man Singh as his clients. During the early 60s, the only son of Pandit Prem Nath – Om Prakash Sharma, frequented the astrology shop for delivering daily lunch for his father. During these visits, young O.P. Sharma spent his spare time learning photography at the neighbour photographic studio. His daily routine quickly turned into a full grown passion for photography and he developed a natural talent for the industry. Despite his grandfather’s distinct profession, young O.P. Sharma pursued his unconventional passion and in 1965 eventually established PREM STUDIO Chandni Chowk, his own photographic studio in the same local as the auspicious Sacha Jyotshi, after his father’s demise. Om Prakash Sharma, carried his father’s reputation with the same fervor, but in an exciting new field. Just like his father, his obvious talent in photography made him a favourite amongst the growing industry. Apart from continuing the expansion of PREM STUDIO as the preferred venue for all localities, O.P. Sharma took up freelance photography for a prominent newspaper, Times of India.

His curiosity took him places covering Asian games internationally including Bangkok, Delhi, Seol and Beijing where he honed his skills and explored new techniques of black and white photographic development. Under the leadership of O.P. Sharma, PREM STUDIO became the pioneer in product photography of handicrafts and other brass and stone sculptures and became the premier producer of such high quality work in those early days.

In addition PREM STUDIO also became a trend-setter, by adapting cutting edge new technology and producing some of the earliest back-to-back black and white albums ever produced. The workmanship and quality was the reason why the professional wrestling community of Delhi gave majority of the photographic projects to PREM STUDIO, Chandni Chowk. The studio also made the video recording of social events popular by being the early promoter of this technique. Due to the early retirement for medical reasons, O.P. Sharma handed the reins of PREM STUDIO to his eldest son, Ankit Sharma in 1996. As if destiny had a plan to repeat itself, Ankit Sharma a mechanical engineer, opted to choose another occupation and took over where his father left. Following the family tradition of excellence and trend-setting, Ankit also showed enthusiasm to experiment with new photographic techniques and also acquired technical training in Photography under the mentorship of the renowned photographer, Mr. R.K. Paul and Mr. O.P. Sharma, at Triveni Kala Sangam, Mandi House, Delhi.

With Ankit Sharma at the helm, PREM STUDIO took an upgrade around the change of the century and set-up a digital lab promoting the trend of instant photography and digital mixing and recording. History repeated itself with Ankit becoming the innovator in designing the first ever Canvera “Portrait” photo-book album in India. The album produced at PREM STUDIO has been a prestige sample of this technique displayed at the Photo Fair Exhibition in Delhi. A testament of Ankit’s forward thinking philosophy is his prominence in the product photography for e-commerce items like, watches, jewellery, sculptures and other handicrafts. With extensive financial investments PREM STUDIO has continued to keep the equipment and facilities up to date and is constantly looking to keep ahead of the competition. In addition PREM STUDIO, Chandni Chowk, is leading the way in pre-wedding shoots, social events, weddings, conferences, parties and candid video and still photography.
